For the seventh year in a row the Federal Trade Commission reported IDENTITY THEFT as the #1 item on the consumer complaints list. In 2006 Identity Theft accounted for 36% of the total consumer complaints. The FTC also reported that credit card fraud topped the list of identity theft complaints at 25% followed by phone & utilities fraud by 16%, bank fraud by 16% and employment fraud at 14%. The federal trade commission estimates that as many as 10 million American’s become victims of identity theft every year.

Based on a survey conducted it is estimated that the total loss due to identity theft was put at approximately $50 billion, with the median individual fraud per victim at $5700.
